MADEIRA RENTAL GUIDE
Rent a Car in Madeira: A Practical Booking Guide
Plan your Madeira car rental with a clear understanding of vehicle categories, pickup choices, documents, deposits, insurance and optional extras before you travel.
Choose a vehicle for the island and your group
Madeira combines modern expressways and tunnels with steep streets, winding regional roads and compact parking spaces. Economy cars can be practical for couples and city parking. Automatic cars reduce clutch work on hills. Family cars and SUVs provide more room, while 7- and 9-seater vehicles help larger groups travel together.
Count both passengers and suitcases before choosing. A vehicle with every seat occupied may not have enough luggage space, so share your group and baggage details when AUTELIRA confirms the request.
- Economy: compact and practical
- Automatic: comfortable on hills and in traffic
- Family or SUV: more passenger and luggage space
- 7- or 9-seater: group travel with vehicle-specific conditions
Madeira Airport, Funchal or accommodation pickup
Select Madeira Airport if you want the rental to begin around your arrival. Allow enough time after landing for baggage collection and the agreed meeting process. If you are staying in Funchal, you can request a city pickup. Hotel or villa delivery is available by arrangement and may carry a location fee.
Late evening and early morning collections may have an out-of-hours charge. AUTELIRA confirms the exact meeting point, contact instructions and applicable fee before the rental.
Documents and driver requirements
The main driver should be prepared to show a valid driving licence and passport or identity card. The website currently states a minimum driver age of 21 and a licence held for at least one year. The rental provider may apply additional conditions according to the vehicle category, driver age or licence country.
Ask before travel if your licence was issued outside the European Union or is not written in the Latin alphabet, as an International Driving Permit or additional documentation may be required by the provider.
Understand the price, deposit and insurance
Displayed daily prices are category guides for high season, with low- and medium-season prices confirmed on request. The minimum rental period is three days. Airport, delivery, out-of-hours, additional-driver and child-seat fees may be added according to your request.
Deposit and payment conditions vary by vehicle. Selected categories may not require a deposit or credit card, while the 9-seater category currently carries a €900 deposit payable by credit card or cash. Review the confirmed insurance cover, excess, exclusions and deposit before accepting the rental.
How to request your Madeira rental car
Complete the booking form with your name, contact details, preferred category, dates, times and pickup location. The website saves the request and gives you a reference. This is not an immediate confirmation.
AUTELIRA checks the request with a local rental provider and contacts you with availability, the vehicle or similar model, final price, conditions and collection details. No online payment is taken through the website.
Before driving away
Check the vehicle condition with the provider, understand the fuel and return policy, confirm the emergency contact and ask any questions about insurance. Photographing the vehicle at collection and return can help keep a clear record for both parties.
Weather and road conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Plan extra time, use suitable routes and follow local signs and provider guidance throughout the rental.
